Born in Sierra Leone, Aisha Koroma is a trauma-responsive mental health and social
services professional whose journey of resilience began when she migrated to the United States as a refugee in her early teens. Dedicated to advocating for and empowering marginalized communities, she has worked extensively with forcibly displaced populations, survivors of human trafficking, unhoused youth, at-risk children, veterans,
and social justice activists.
Aisha is a Board-Certified Psychotherapist in Texas and Maryland with a B.S. in
Psychology from the University of Houston-Downtown and an M.A. in Counseling from
Prairie View A&M University. She holds certifications in Trauma- Informed Care (TIC), Community-Based Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS-CB) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) from Harvard Medical School, the World Health Organization (WHO) and John Hopkins University respectively. Aisha is also a certified trainer in
Psychological First Aid (PFA), Trauma Informed Cross-Cultural Psychoeducation, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), and Stress Management.
Currently, she is the Assistant Director of Social Integration for US Programs at HIAS,
previously working with the United Nations migration agency IOM in Qatar, where she developed key MHPSS and GBV initiatives. A founding member of Texas’ first refugee
mental health clinic and the Refugee Mental Health & Wellness Conference, Aisha’s
contributions extend to research and advocacy, including co-authoring The Handbook of Refugee Experience: Trauma, Resilience, and Recovery and serving as a co-researcher for
a Health Equity article on the Impact of COVID-19 on An Urban Refugee Population,
published in the National Library of Medicine.
In 2014, she founded Lift a Village, a nonprofit supporting communities in Sierra Leone.
Aisha is also the owner of the AK Center for Wellbeing, providing mental health support and consultation to individuals and institutions like NASA, the Ford Foundation, and the
U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI). She also leads the Safe Space Project, promoting mental health awareness and stigma reduction.
A Global Goodwill Ambassador, Refugee Congress Delegate for D.C, and a Sparking Change Grantee, Aisha has received multiple honors including being named one of the 50 Most Influential Young Sierra Leoneans. A sought-after speaker, she leverages her lived experience and expertise to amplify refugee voices and advocates for mental health literacy and the creation of brave, safe, and inclusive spaces globally.
